Welcome to one of the most unique, creative subforums offered here at Charlie-Bone.com. If you have never taken part in a Roleplay, you are in for a treat!
What is a Roleplay? Basically, a roleplay (also called an RP for short) is like a story, written by a group of people. Each person is a character. Using their character, the Roleplayer (also called RPer for short) takes part in the story, and uses that character to help advance the plot. Think of it as a giant game of make-believe.
Why do people Roleplay? Not everyone likes to RP. It takes a lot of commitment to participate. If you make a character and help tell a story, you usually have to stick with that story for a long time. If you forget about an RP and walk away, it usually "dies" before it gets to have an ending. This is no fun for the other RPers involved. I have a bad habit of forgetting about RPs and walking away. This is why you will probably never see me Roleplaying. I have killed too many of them... *looks at shoes in embarrassment* But even I can admit that Roleplays are a LOT of fun! You get to step into someone else's shoes. Maybe you're a hero! Maybe you're a monster! Maybe you have magical powers! You get to pretend to be something else for a while, just like being in a play.
Oh... I don't know... I don't think I'm a very good writer... That's okay! The members here at Charlie Bone are all different ages, and we're all at different writing levels. As long as you really give it your best shot, we'll welcome you, and help you out. Some members find it helpful to type out their posts in Word, so they can check the spelling and grammar. Some members started out not being very good writers, and they've gotten so good, they're writing short stories and novels now! It's really, really good practice! And the best part is that a RP post only has to be three lines long, so as long as you can string together three lines of story, you'll do just fine. :)
Is there anything I should know or do before I start RPing? Yes yes yes. This guide will do three things:
1) it will teach you all about how to Roleplay
2) it will teach you all about the Roleplay rules we have here at Charlie Bone
3) You will have to "sign" this thread before you can begin Roleplaying. If you don't sign this thread, you will not be allowed to RP. The instructions for how to sign are at the bottom of the rules, so get a-readin! :)
Zoinks there's a lot of rules! What are you, some kind of rule-happy maniac? To be honest, yes. :p We have lots of different members on this forum. Some of them are very little kids. Some of them are older, but have very strict rules in their homes. In order to make sure things stay friendly for all our readers, and to make sure none of the members get in trouble for participating in something they shouldn't, we've had to come up with a lot of rules. I know it seems like a lot of fuss, and some of the rules might even seem kind of silly to you. But every member of this forum is important to me, and I'd like to make sure that this forum welcomes everyone, no matter what age they are, and that includes the Roleplays.
Once you've read all these rules/guidelines from top to bottom, you might have to come back to this thread from time to time to re-read a rule. Here's some quick links so you can find what you're looking for a little faster:

Hard and Fast Rules
The single most important rule in the RP subforum:
If Disney doesn't do it, YOU don't do it. And I'm talking Disney cartoons. Snow White did not drink alcohol. Cinderella did not use drugs. Ariel had a daughter, but was never pregnant (see section "having a baby" for more details on how to handle this event). No one says bad words.
Anything and everything that you post should be fit to be read by a five year old. If you are unsure, either
A) email nevvie for her opinion
B) don't do it. Better safe than sorry
Breaking this rule can, AND WILL result in a strike. You will probably not get any other warning, so be very, very careful about what you choose to write about.
Post length
EACH ROLEPLAY ENTRY MUST BE AT LEAST THREE FULL LINES LONG. We like nice, lengthy roleplay here, not three words per entry. If you cannot come up with that much to write, walk away for five minutes and give it some serious thought.
the best way to check is to type out your roleplay post continuously. Don't add any line breaks until you're sure and certain that it's 3 lines long.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Example:
Sally drew a deep breath and looked up at the sky, trying not to cry. She focused very intently on the clouds that rolled past, as dark and stormy as she was feeling right now. How could her best friend, someone she trusted, be so mean? She began blinking rapidly, because the tears were welling up in her eyes. Try as she might, they began to fall anyway, blending in with the falling raindrops.
Please note: If the above sample appears as more or less than exactly three lines, your size settings are different from Nevermore's, so you'll need to adjust your posts accordingly. This example is your official guideline for how long an RP post needs to be, and if your post falls shorter than this, it WILL be deleted.
Only now, after you are positive that your post is 3 continuous lines long, can you clean it up:
Sally drew a deep breath and looked up at the sky, trying not to cry. She focused very intently on the clouds that rolled past, as dark and stormy as she was feeling right now.
How could her best friend, someone she trusted, be so mean? She began blinking rapidly, because the tears were welling up in her eyes.
Try as she might, they began to fall anyway, blending in with the falling raindrops.
The above paragraph is technically three lines.
----------------------------------------------------------
Punctuation
Beyond the obvious (putting periods at the end of a sentence) there are other rules for punctuating a post so that it is clear to your readers.
Non-roleplay chat must be kept to a minimal, and enclosed in ((double brackets)) Every post in any RP MUST contain RP. A post containing pure ((sidechatter)) will be deleted.
All speech must be in speechmarks. Both " and ' are fine, though " is preferable.
Conduct
The filter blocks out bad-language, but there is to be absolutely no bad language used against another person with asterisks in place of letters. Calling someone a f****** b**** is not acceptable, and may very well earn you a strike.
If someone controls your character without your permission, moves the story somewhere you aren't comfortable, or posts something that you're pretty sure break the RP rules, inform them politely. If they repeatedly offend you, please inform me.
And no flaming. Ever.
Along the lines of conduct also comes what is and is not acceptable in a roleplay. There are strict guidelines for things like scary scenes, fight scenes, and having babies. Make sure you read those guidelines. (http://charlie-bone.com/forum/showpost.php?p=133024&postcount=5) Failure to follow them can, and will, result in a strike.
Pictures
Pictures are not allowed. If you can't describe a character, setting, or outfit without the use of a picture, then you're going to have trouble in a roleplay, which relies on description as well as dialogue. Drawing fan-art of your character and posting it in the art forum is fine, however you still have to fill out a character bio as well.
The Side-Chat Thread
I understand that sometimes you don't know what to say or do next in a RP, and the whole team needs to re-group to figure out what to do next. That is what the sidechatter thread is for. Please do not use this as a crutch. You do not have to run your every move past your fellow RPers. Use this only when you really, really need to talk to other RPers about the RP.
Similarly, if you are using the side-chatter thread to advance your roleplay, please take the time to start EACH post with the TITLE of the roleplay it pertains to. More than one Roleplay may be using the side-chatter thread at one time, and specifying which RP you are talking about will make it easier for everyone.
Catching Up on a Roleplay
If you don't know what's going on in a roleplay, take the time to actually READ what your fellow RPers have written. People have taken the time to write and post. It is downright RUDE not to read what they've said, and to instead demand a recap. You are not the star of the roleplay. A roleplay cannot exist without a group of people to contribute. Your fellow writers deserve just as much attention spent on their own posts as you deserve on yours. Even if you have been on vacation for a week, and have a ton of reading to do, find a day where you've got some time, grab a cup of tea, and get reading. That's what I have to do, every day, and I have to do it for the whole forum. It probably won't take as long as you think. ;)

Creating a Roleplay
If you wish to create a roleplay, it is helpful if you choose a subject everyone will know about. 'Harry Potter', 'Charlie Bone', 'Lord of the Rings' and so on are good choices; perhaps choosing a not-very-well-known book/TV programme/film is not.
Roleplay doesn't have to be set in a fictional world - you can create a roleplay based around an actual event, like Halloween or Christmas, and you can even RP as yourself.
In general, if you want to create a roleplay, choose a fun topic most people will be able to relate to.
If there is a roleplay exactly the same in the forum, don't start an identical one.
You create a Roleplay the same way you start a thread. Using the "New Thread" button, go to make a new thread. In this first post:
Tell your readers what (basically) your Roleplay is about. You don't have to write the whole story. Just give people an idea so they know whether or not it's something they want to be a part of. If you're not sure how to do this, read the first post in some of the other existing Roleplays to get some ideas.
Provide your readers with a factfile to fill out. What is a factfile? Read on:
The factfile does two things: It helps RPers find inspiration for their characters, and it helps readers get a quick idea about what makes each character special. A basic fact file would be:
Character's Name:
Gender:
Physical description (eye colour, hair colour, skin, dress sense, any physical flaws):
Personality (a decent-length description, help us get to know your character):
Background (stuff about their past, etc):
Other points can be put on, depending on your RP. Factfiles for characters might include Endowments, magical powers, or special talents. Maybe each character can transform into a certain animal, or can control an element. You get the point. If there's extra stuff people can tell readers about their characters, tack it onto the factfile sheet.
You may have a maximum of two characters to control. Anything beyond that would be hogging the story.
Generally, it is considered good manners to wait until a few people have joined a Roleplay before you actually start the RP story.
Then, just like finishing up any kind of thread you're creating, push "Submit New Thread" and proceed to wait eagerly for someone to come along and join in. :)

Creating Your Character
Special thanks to Cat for writing this phenomenal section
A Well-Rounded Character vs. A Mary-Sue
Ah, the Mary-Sue. I could devote an entire section to her, and so I will. Mary-Sue is one of the most annoying people on Earth, yet she crops up surprisingly often in roleplays and fanfiction, sometimes by mistake. I have written Mary-Sues, I'm sure you have too. And so we would like to make the world a Sue-free zone.
Who is Mary Sue? Mary Sue, sometimes shortened simply to Sue, is a pejorative term used to describe a fictional character who plays a major role in the plot on such a scale that suspension of disbelief fails due to the character's traits, skills and abilities being tenuously or inadequately justified. The concept is particularly characterised by overly idealized and clichéd mannerisms, lacking noteworthy flaws, and primarily functioning as wish-fulfillment fantasies for their authors. Mary Sues can be either male or female, but male characters are often dubbed "Gary Stu", "Marty Stu", or similar names.
While the label "Mary Sue" itself originates from a parody of this type of character, most characters labeled "Mary Sues" by readers are not intended by authors as such. Another definition of Mary-Sue is a character who is too perfect to be true, i. e. one with too many positive character traits compared to actual character flaws, or being remarkably attractive in comparison to the other characters.
Perhaps the single underlying feature of all characters commonly classed as Mary Sues is that they are too ostentatious for the audience's taste, or that the author seems to favor the character too highly. The author may seem to push how exceptional and wonderful the "Mary Sue" character is on his or her audience, sometimes leading the audience to dislike or even resent the character fairly quickly - kind of an "author's pet" effect.
Thank you, Wikipedia.
There are diferent kinds of Mary-Sue: we have the Perfect Sue. She might have knee-length, perfect, fiery red hair, amethyst eyes, pearly teeth and a flawless body. Every boy falls in love with Perfect Sue, but they do not realise that she has supernatural magic powers, she can fly, become invisible and probably has an animal familiar. She will probably have to save the world at some point, and every other character adores her.
Are you thinking 'HAHAHA, my character is nothing like that...she has flaws!' Well, my friend, you are not home and dry yet.
Step forward, Angsty-Sue.
Angsty-Sue often has long, raven-black hair and eyes of an unbelievable colour. She might also have white, white skin, and may be a goth/emo. She may have had a tortured and tragic past, and blame herself for tragedies. But, despite all this, everyone may love her and the hero will fall in love with her.
Mary-Sue has a ridiculous name. An example of this is in 'My Immortal', the worst fanfiction ever. The heroine is called Ebony Dark'ness Dementia Raven Way. She is of the Angsty-Sue variety. I know no one here will ever sink to such ridiculous levels, but even a name like Eternity Johnson is in the danger zone.
And it doesn't end here...oh, no. We have the Anti-Sue. Some people go so far trying not to create a Mary-Sue, they end up creating a character who is as boring as boiled potatoes. Anti-Sue traits include physical unattractiveness, poorly handled mental illness (including sociopathy and psychopathy), noticeably lacking in power or competency relative to other characters, being generally disliked by others or never interacting with them, cowardice, and other unflattering characteristics.
In short, these are awful characters you seriously want to avoid. I suggest that you create your character, and then run him/her through this handy little test: http://www.springhole.net/quizzes/marysue.htm
Other People's Characters
They belong to their owners, whether their owner created them or adopted them. Do not play other people's characters. The one exception is when you have been given permission to do so by the character's owner.
You cannot control the character of a member who has been banned (either temporarily or permanently), or who has left the forum of their own free will. People disappear from our lives in the real world, without warning, and we cannot pretend to be them, either. It's hard, but when a character goes inactive, your characters have to figure out a way to deal with it.
If you have been temp-banned, perma-banned, or are simply choosing to leave the forum, you may email Nevermore, giving your permission to allow others to take over your character. Then, and only then, will Nevermore grant special permission for someone to adopt a banned/quit member's character

Sticky Situations
This section involves things that have caused problems in the past. They are situations that often come up in RPs, and are often handled very poorly. The following sections provide guidelines about having babies, having a homosexual couple, having fight scenes, having scary scenes, and killing your character. There is a right way and a wrong way to do all of these. Make sure you read this section very carefully, and refer back to it often. Failure to follow these rules can and will result in a strike without warning.
Having a Baby
Remember the most important rule? "If Disney doesn't do it, I don't do it." Have you ever seen a pregnant Disney princess? Didn't think so. The same goes for your characters. Now, I understand that there are babies in this world. Little kids understand this, too. However, CB is not, and WILL NOT, be the place where children learn the answer to the question "where do babies come from?" There are a few ways that your characters can have kids. Please note, YOUR CHARACTER WILL NEVER BE PREGNANT.
How to have a baby in a Roleplay
When two characters are going to be the parents, there are three simple steps to having a baby.
1) The mom character and the dad character (both age 18 or older) get married. (If your characters are younger than 18, they must wait until they are older to get married and have kids)
2) There is a timeskip of ONE YEAR.
3) When the story picks up after the timeskip, lo and behold! There's a baby in the story!
As a courtesy to other RPers, DO NOT TIMESKIP UNTIL EVERYONE IS READY. Figure it out in the sidechat thread. If you MUST give a deadline before the timeskip happens, make it no less than 3 days.
Other ways to have a baby:
1) Your character(s) may adopt a pre-existing baby from an orphanage (no real parents will ever come forward)
2) A baby may be found on your doorstep (no real parents will ever come forward)
3) Things can happen very fantasy-like. Babies can magically appear in a blooming flower. They can materialize in a cloud of smoke. A stork can deliver it.
Homosexual Couples
In this one case, I say Disney be darned. I'm all for civil rights, and if you want two characters of the same gender to fall in love and have a romantic relationship, you go right ahead. HOWEVER your relationship must be kept as clean as heterosexual relationships. That means: your couple may hold hands, and they may kiss. They may say "I love you," they may get married, and they may adopt children (or have kids in any other way approved above). As always, if you're unsure whether or not you're about to handle this situation appropriately, please email me.
Having a Fight to the Death
Fights happen. Good has to vanquish evil, and it's not always an easy win. Disney has some pretty crazy fight scenes in their movies, but there is one hard and fast rule: humans do not kill humans. Humans can kill animals, and humans can kill monsters, but when a human dies, it is almost certainly an accident.
Fighting Amongst Human Characters:
Rule #1: People are not murdered.
I've thought long and hard, and Beauty and the Beast has what I will argue to be the most intense fight scene in Disney cartoon history. The beast is sitting alone, in a dark castle, dying. Gaston (the human villain) comes charging into the room, and shoots the beast in the back with an arrow. Then Gaston goes to bash the beast's head in with a spiky club. The beast, fighting back, gives Gaston a good thrashing and dangles him, by his neck, over a deep chasm. But wait! the hero thinks better of this act! He lets Gaston go! It's not over yet! As the beast finally reunites with Belle, he is stabbed in the back by Gaston! And just as Gaston goes to deal the death blow, he raises his arm, leans back, and... slips and falls off the roof. Into the chasm. Killed by his own doing, with a little help from fate.
Killing a human fight scene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g7_zopLtpdk&feature=related)
If there is a roleplay in which murder is part of the story (a murder mystery, a Harry Potter RP in which people die because of Death Eaters, etc) do not depict the murder. Someone can tell the other characters about it after the fact (they were an eye-witness, for example), characters can read about it in a newspaper, stumble upon someone's remains, etc. DO NOT make a scene depicting the murder, and spare the graphics when you recount the fact that a murder has occurred.
Fights Involving Monsters
You may kill a monster in any way you wish, with two rules in mind:
1) It may not be gory. No blood and guts flying everywhere.
2) It may not be long and drawn out.
In The Little Mermaid, Eric impaled Ursula (no longer a mermaid but a transformed monster) on the end of a ship. Ursula's guts do not go flying, and Eric is not drenched in a wave of blood. She was stabbed. We get it. In Sleeping Beauty, Phillip stabbed Maleficent (in dragon form) with a sword. He did not cut off one limb at a time. One good, swift blow to the heart, the dragon falls down dead, justice prevails. Huzzah. In The Lion King, Scar is killed by hyenas. Or at least, we think that's what happens. Disney had the courtesy to cut away before we could find out what getting mauled by angry hyenas looks like. In these fight scenes, you can have a knock-down, dragout fight, and if you so desire, one character may kill another.
Scary Scenes/Roleplay Plots
Different people have different things that they think are scary. Aliens scare me positively senseless. So do ghosts. I go out of my way NOT to watch movies with ghosts and aliens, because I know I won't sleep that night. Zombies, on the other hand, amuse me. Someone else might think Zombies are the most terrifying thing on the planet, while Aliens are a laughable idea. I know someone who is sure and certain to have nightmares if she sees a movie with a scary snake scene. Here's the point: what you think is scary, and what I think is scary might be two different things. It's your job, as the writer, to predict what people will find scary, and warn them before the scary scene/roleplay takes place. Put it in big red letters: WARNING: THE FOLLOWING SCENE/ROLEPLAY MAY BE TOO SCARY FOR SOME READERS. IT CONTAINS (insert scary thing here: zombies, ghosts, aliens, rats, snakes, etc etc). There. Now everyone has been warned, and the scary scene can begin.
Killing Your Character
Rule #1: People are not murdered.
I know sometimes you want to just be done with a roleplay. Sometimes the quickest, easiest way is to kill off your character. Sometimes there is a fight brewing, and you and the other RPer have decided only one person will walk away alive. If you choose to kill your character, I don't want it to be graphic. If your character is locked in a room with brain-eating Zombies, end the scene with a blood-curdling scream, but don't tell us what happens. Someone later on can confirm that your character is, indeed, dead. If your character was Ursula, the sea witch, and she is impaled on the end of a ship, fine. Tell us she was stabbed by the ship. Don't tell us all about the blood and guts flying everywhere. She was stabbed. We get it. Likewise, don't make it all long and drawn out. Even if you have come to hate your character, a good writer usually won't make their character suffer a long, drawn out, agonizing death.
Basically, this: Kill your character. Inform your readers that yes, your character is dead. But for goodness sake, don't make anyone throw up.

Post Ettiquette
Writing your RP post
Role-plays must be written in the past-tense.
INCORRECT: Cat sits for hours. She is typing a list of rules for the roleplay forum. She has a splitting headache.
CORRECT: Cat sat for hours. She typed a list of rules for the roleplay forum. She had a splitting headache.
Keeping Player Knowledge Separate From Character Knowledge
There may be points in the RP where a secret is revealed and out for everyone to read about. However, if Character A told Character B this secret while they were alone, no other character should know it. If you are unsure about whether your character could have overheard, please ask before throwing this piece of information out as a topic of conversation around the dinner table. This also falls into implied secrets. For example - we all know the drill. A guy character hangs out with a girl character, it's assumed by the players that these two will soon embark upon a romantic relationship. However, if they have done nothing in the RP to indicate romantic feelings for each other, the other characters should not be talking about how these two are madly in love.
Joining in
If the roleplay is about a book/TV programme/film/comic or anything you haven't read, it is suggested that you don't join in until you can consider yourself familiar with the subject.
Likewise, ANYONE can join ANY Roleplay, no matter how long the RP has been going on. As long as you are up to date with the entire story, and can create a character that comfortably works into the plot, you are allowed to join.
Openings
There has been a growing trend in people asking for "openings." This baffles me. In real life, do you ask for an opening when you walk up on friends during lunch break? Do you ask for an opening if you walk into the kitchen when your mum and dad are talking? No. You just do it. Same goes for RPs, within reason. Obviously, if John and Sue are about to have their romantic first kiss, show some courtesy and let them finish before you walk in and go "hey guys, what's up?" Other than that, people do not have to specially shape their conversations so that you can join in. If you think of a way for your character to sidle into the action without disrupting a very serious moment in the plot, go for it!
Keeping The Mood
You are about to join a scary RP about people trapped in a haunted house. The current scene has all of the characters trapped in a room, and there is a strange sound in the hall outside... suddenly, the door creaks open, slowly. The group gasps and huddles together... when, without warning...
a clown comes running in, handing out balloon animals, throwing creme pies, honking a bike horn, and squirting everyone in the face with water! HAHAHAHAHA! Congratulations. You have just killed the mood.
John and Sue have been in love for months. Until now, their love has been un-confessed. But at last, John and Sue are together, alone, and are finally sharing their feelings.
John: "I've loved you since I first set eyes on you Sue. I never want to be apart from you. I want us always to be together."
Sue: "I love you too, John. I think about you all the time when you aren't around, and when you are around, you're the only one I look at."
John and Sue move in for the long-awaited kiss. John leans forward, Sue closes her eyes...
and in storms a jealous girl whom no one has ever met, and has never before said to anyone that she's in love with John. She grabs Sue by the hair and pulls her away just as they're about to kiss, and SHE kisses John instead! Congratulations. You have just killed the mood.
Do you see the trend here? One was a scary scene turned silly. One was a love scene turned unexpectedly violent. This is a common, COMMON mistake made by people new to RPing. They want to be silly and have some fun and mess around with everyone. Fine. I understand that. But YOU need to understand something, Mister Silly: it's probably taken a group of people two or three months to get to the moment in the story where everyone was trapped in the haunted house, or maybe John and Sue have tiptoed around that relationship all summer long. You have just destroyed MONTHS of hard work. For what? A quick laugh? It's a great way to make a lot of enemies fast. Have some respect. Just like you wouldn't scribble in a library book, don't be the jerk who comes in and trashes a Roleplay. No one thinks it's funny.

Finally, before you begin to RP:
You must post the following (in this thread):
I, (insert your username here), have read all of the rules, and agree to follow them. I understand that if I break one of these rules, I can get a strike. If I have any questions about the rules, I will either email nevermore (nevermore@charlie-bone.com), or use the Ask a Mod thread in The Website Subforum. (http://charlie-bone.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=14)
As indicated above, if you have any questions, please do not post them here.
Also, if you begin to Roleplay and have not "signed" this thread, you will be removed from The Theater until you sign the rules.
