That's right, another competition is in the works! This time around, I'm challenging you to make an instructional video to give to our Newbies. What's an instructional video? Basically this: a video made by you, which is very amusing to watch, which covers some of CB's most important rules. The winning video will be permanently posted in the FAQ that we give out to every new member, and it will help ensure that even if they never take the time to read all the rules, by watching a short video, they'll at least learn the most important stuff.

UE had a similar contest years ago, and the winning video was a hoot! So were all the other submissions. Have a look at UE's official instructional video here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSIokSOKIws)

The Rules of the Game:

Anyone can enter.

You can make your videos however you like, whether you grab a camcorder, make a slideshow, film real people, put on a sock puppet show. Whatever. I give you full and complete artistic license to make the film however you wish.

Videos cannot exceed the 5 minute range (you can go shorter, you can go a tad longer, but if you're creeping up toward 6 minutes, it's getting too long)

If you film people in the video, make sure you have their permission to be in it. We don't want lawsuits.

Don't use any licensed music, movies, images, etc in your film. Again, we don't want lawsuits.

Your video may contain "fake-out" swears (that is to say, bleeps that sound where a bad word normally would appear--just like on TV), as long as no one can read your lips.

Your video MUST contain the following rules to qualify:
- don't say anything that would make a grandma blush (so watch what you type because we have little kiddies)
- don't share personal info
- communicate like an educated speaker of the english language (ie use good spelling/grammar)
- don't spam/txt/etc
- be nice (aka, no fighting, flaming, trash-talking, etc)

In addition to the five big rules, your video may also contain other rules from the official FAQ that you think are important. Your video doesn't have to, but if you think there's a really good rule that should be in your video, feel free to include it.

You may recruit help from anyone you wish in the real world (parents, friends, siblings, etc). You may also collaborate with CB members, however if you do, please keep all of your planning on this forum. If you go off having off-forum chats with people, it would completely defeat the purpose of making a safety video, wouldn't it? :rolleyes: Incidentally, if you need to make a thread where you and a friend will discuss your video, feel free to make a special thread right here in this subforum.

As soon as we have 5 videos loaded (or more than 5 if someone assures me that their video is on it's way to my mailbox AFTER we have 5 videos), we will vote on which one will become our forum's official video

Queenie has spoken of a magical program called "youtube downloader" that will convert files for you. You may want to look into this.

well, one of UE's popular runners-up was a slideshow that was drawn on paint, narrated by a stick figure named Bob. It was bare bones, but still quite amusing.

right. Think putting a black bar over the speaker's mouth, bleeping out the bad words like they do on TV, etc. Obviously, videos do not HAVE to have swears (you'll notice UE's did not), however if you've come up with a "don't do this" scenario, and would like to bleep swears, do it in such a way that what's being said is left ENTIRELY up to the imaginations of our viewers.

If you finish your videos early, feel free to submit them before the deadline. I'm dying to see them, and I'm sure I'm not the only one! :)

I know that I shouldn't bend the rules, but I finished my video a few days ago but forgot to put it up, and now I'm in Itally which dosn't have the video saved on the computer.
I get back on the 1st, so I'd be able to hand it in a day late but I shouldn't do that.
It's OK if I can't but I would of liked to entered.

my internet is a bit shoddy at the moment, so while I'll still be online regularly, things like uploading your videos onto youtube and getting this competition underway will have to be postponed until things are back to normal.

The good news is, if you were thinking of making a video but have been SLACKING OFF ( :mad: ) you now get a couple of extra days to slap something together and email it to me. :D

EDIT ON NOVEMBER 30TH:

Okay... I will say this one last time and then give up on my cause.

We only have 3 videos. One from ArcticRose, one from BurningFire, and one from PrettyInPointe. I want 5 for a competition. My computer should be running at full steam again sometime this week, so here's the deal:

If you don't want me to have to scrap this competition, and you have not already submitted a video, then I will give you until FRIDAY to get your video made and submitted to my inbox. (nevermore@charlie-bone.com). (Mods, Supers, I'm talking to you guys too!) I know there's at LEAST enough creativity in all of you to make us a slideshow with 5 rules, so please do the forum a favor and give it a shot!

Okay, so I'm trying to upload all the videos, but I've run into a few hitches:

Cat, and Blake: Youtube doesn't recognize the file type that you guys sent me. Are all of you tech savvy enough to convert the files into a quicktime or Windows Media file? (Windows Movie Maker files are not recognized by either Youtube or my computer)

Pokie: Yours uploaded ok, but has no runtime. And I can't open it on my computer either... Can you perhaps try sending a different kind of file my way? (same as above, quicktime and windows media seem to be working the best)

PrettyInPointe: Your video uploaded without any problems, but it is very, very hard to read: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Egichh_3QSw
If you would like a couple of extra days to fix the font sizes, I am willing to wait, because the part I was able to squint and figure out was really amusing. :D

I had to write it backwards because webcams automatically mirror images, and I couldn't figure out how to flip it back the right way

Ugh I've been so busy lately, but all I can say is I have no definate date, but it WILL be submitted soon. It's in flash form, all I need to do is find a conversion site that actually works. Example: A .swf to .mp4 converter it's hard to find, but I'll submit it as soon as possible, besides, I'll be on my break soon from school and I'll be able to definately submit it :)

Well there's youku, which shows mostly Engliash videos but the entire website design is in Chinese and I assume there would be Chinese instructions and sort.
Is it possible to upload vids here?

Oooh!! If you guys need to convert files, there's this thing you can download that does it really well. It's called Youtube Downloader. There was a thread about it a while ago. But, yeah, so you download that and then drag you're file that you want to convert and then there's this dropdown menu and it converts it. I don't know if that's any help, but I just thought I'd share.

Sadly, Nevs, I tried to yesterday, but my e-mail won't let it be an attachment because the file is too big. It's only pictures and badly sung music, but it manages to be wayy too big for my e-mail's attachment capacity.

And, thank you :D It wasn't intended to be amusing, only the nomming Barry, but it turned out that way :D

There's a way to zip files that shrinks them down to an email-able size... I think... yes, on your computer, right click the file, and choose "send to --> Compressed (zipped) folder" that will "zip" the file, which should condense it into something small enough to be able to be attached in an email. Then when I receive it, I unzip it, and it pops back up in full form, like a jack in the box. Hooray!

@Cat: Thanks! :D I don't get many people saying that they love my voice. Most people say that I'm "uber-posh" at school, but then again, I go to a school where everyone drops letters when they speak, and they call me a boff for being able to spell 'Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious'. *shrugs*

... We have a similar accents? YAY! I love having a similar accent as someone else :D

...Wait... you're Scottish, aren't you? So does that mean that a) You don't have a Scottish accent of b) I have a Scottish-esque accent (apparently, according to a girl who thinks saying that I sound Scottish is an insult to me, whereas I like the idea of sounding Scottish).

Hmm... curiouser and curiouser. I'll poke around the interwebs and badger my boyfriend to see if there's anything that can be done. It would just be nice to have them all officially uploaded on our CB account, because then if a newbie watches one, it should automatically pull up all the other submissions as alternate suggestions.

That's a good thought, however, the problem is that if I run the video through several different formats and then compress it in order to make the file smaller than the original, the video would suffer loss of clarity and sound, and it would also be lagged e.g. The om nom nom sounds for Barry eating spam could easily come up halfway through the next slide.
