Hi there Eliza! Basically, the short story contest is a competition organised by Thirrin Vertigo in which we submit short stories, and then we vote for our favourites. Whoever gets the most votes wins. We just had one this month, and the theme was vampires. :)
Roleplays are like an interactive story, in which we are given a basic storyline, and we then make up characters and act out a story using those characters. To quote Nev's (our administrator) guide to roleplaying:
What is a Roleplay? Basically, a roleplay (also called an RP for short) is like a story, written by a group of people. Each person is a character. Using their character, the Roleplayer (also called RPer for short) takes part in the story, and uses that character to help advance the plot. Think of it as a giant game of make-believe.
Why do people Roleplay? Not everyone likes to RP. It takes a lot of commitment to participate. If you make a character and help tell a story, you usually have to stick with that story for a long time. If you forget about an RP and walk away, it usually "dies" before it gets to have an ending. This is no fun for the other RPers involved. I have a bad habit of forgetting about RPs and walking away. This is why you will probably never see me Roleplaying. I have killed too many of them... *looks at shoes in embarrassment* But even I can admit that Roleplays are a LOT of fun! You get to step into someone else's shoes. Maybe you're a hero! Maybe you're a monster! Maybe you have magical powers! You get to pretend to be something else for a while, just like being in a play.
Oh... I don't know... I don't think I'm a very good writer... That's okay! The members here at Charlie Bone are all different ages, and we're all at different writing levels. As long as you really give it your best shot, we'll welcome you, and help you out. Some members find it helpful to type out their posts in Word, so they can check the spelling and grammar. Some members started out not being very good writers, and they've gotten so good, they're writing short stories and novels now! It's really, really good practice! And the best part is that a RP post only has to be three lines long, so as long as you can string together three lines of story, you'll do just fine.

Hope that helps. :)
