View Full Version : How's the Weather?

I think weather conversations get a bad wrap (rap?). People act like talking about the weather is boring, but really, it can be a great conversation starter, and when you're like us, and have people all around the world with all sorts of crazy things going on, it can be downright interesting!
Like Sheree for instance, who lives upside-down in Australia and where it's winter in July and summer in December! Crazy stuff!
Apart from our discussions about heat waves of late in the "What Did You do Today" thread, I was also just looking out the window with a smile. I grew up in the deserts of California, and while I no longer live there, I am still not used to this thing called a "heat wave." See, where I come from, starting in May, it gets hotter than you can ever possibly imagine (we LITERALLY used to fry eggs outside for fun when I was a kid), and it stays that way until... December. No joke. And even then, most of you would probably run around in tank tops if you came to visit. There was no up and down, hot miserable stretch followed by some clouds rolling in and cooling things off.
So imagine my pleasant surprise when, despite the fact that things warmed up in my new location for a week or two, over the last few days clouds have rolled in, and rain has fallen, and OMG it's cold! Like, I wore my winter coat today. And it's late May! What a pleasant surprise! I had no idea weather could do that! This whole "weather pattern" thing is very nice, if I do say so. :o
So how are things in your neck of the woods? What's typical for your area? Are things going all wonky? I know there's been a volcano causing trouble in Europe, and I seem to recall hearing that it was an El Nino weather year (places that usually get rain don't, and places that are usually dry get downpours), but that may have been speculation.
Anyway, without further ado, a thread to discuss the weather in your area, and all of it's joys and miseries. :)

Welcome to Britain, where we talk about the weather ALL the time, no matter how bland it is. "Oh, it was raging mild today!" :p
For me it's really, really hot right now. Even though 23 degrees is probably ski-jacket wear for you guys, for me it's everyone wearing shorts and moaning about how hot they are. The sun's not out right now but it's kinda humid. Nasty. :(

I'm in Illinois and it's 90 degrees (Fahrenheit) and very humid. Appaerently Illinois is one of the most humid states in the country and on days like these I don't doubt it.

Ew I hate humid. Humid is the worst of all weathers. I heard once that humid weather is so miserable because the air is wet, so when you sweat, it doesn't evaporate properly, so your body can't cool itself off. I sit and think sadly about that fact whenever it's humid.
A few tricks I learned over the years:
1) a cold shower. Not like, icecubes cold, but use more cool water than warm water, and gradually turn the heat down the longer you're in the shower. It's very refreshing.
2) Put either your body spray or lotion in the fridge. It's a nice blast of cold after your shower to put cold lotion on, or spritz yourself with cold body spray before you head out
3) Make blended ice drinks. I like to make coffee drinks (just dump leftover coffee, a splash of cream, a spoon of sugar, and a handful of ice in the blender and give it a whirl. Chocolate sauce or a small scoop of ice cream never hurts either). You can also make fruit smoothies using fruit, fruit juice, milk, yogurt, or any combination of those (your main goal is fruit + liquid) along with some ice. One of my go-to drinks is a banana, a cup of milk (or orange juice), a spoonful of peanut butter, and a bit of ice. Nom. Peanut butter and banana smoothie. :o
Really though, the only limit is your own creativity. Experiment with different flavors of yogurt, different fruits (frozen berries instead of ice cubes are awesome, too), or different juices. You'll find a favorite. You can use pineapple and a can of coconut milk to make pina coladas, too! I think they even make pina colada yogurt, so you can really up the ante if you get some of that stuff. Mmm... now I want smoothies. :D

Because I'm lazy:
I envy everyone who has to endure weather like the last couple of days on a daily basis, and how they can survive it so easily. Because it was so hot, I've had to go around the house barefoot this weekend...and I hardly ever go without socks during the day. Felt strange anyway.
Wasn't barefoot at all today though, weather was awful. Very cloudy and cold, there were even small rain showers when I was out today, huge contrast from Saturday and Sunday. Sod's law I guess.

Yeah, it cooled right down today. I had all the windows open in my house and I was home alone, so the doors kept banging in scary ways. I hope it stays like this so I don't fry in exams.

Where I live, I get every type of weather imaginable (except humidity, thank God).
In the summer it gets in to the 100'sF (around 38C) and in the winter it gets down to -20F (-29C).
I can handle any type of weather.

Ew I hate humid. Humid is the worst of all weathers. I heard once that humid weather is so miserable because the air is wet, so when you sweat, it doesn't evaporate properly, so your body can't cool itself off.
We just learned this in science. ;) Yeah, this is correct. The air already has so much water vapor in it that it doesn't want to evaporate any more liquid. The sweat evaporating is what cools you down; therefore, no evaporation, harder to cool down. :D
Correction: no rain, it actually got up to about 64F. TOMORROW will be pouring. Dx
Ahaha, Leeny, wow. xD We're spoiled here. It rarely gets below freezing here, and it gets up to about the mid to high 80sF in the summer. xD Hasn't snowed here for over twenty (thirty? I don't remember) years, and we haven't hit 100 for a long time. xD

Do you think it could be the volcano in Iceland messing with the weather across Europe? I read recently that the last time a big volcano went off (Pinatubo in the Philippines in the 90s) the whole planet cooled by .5 Farenheight for a whole year! And it messed with weather patterns globally.
And that, apparently, large quantities of sulfur dioxide spewed into the stratosphere (like large volcanoes do) could counteract global warming (http://www.wired.com/science/planetearth/magazine/16-07/ff_geoengineering?currentPage=all). Superfreakonomics is a very interesting book. :nodnod:

Eeeew, I hate when it's so hot out that even the nights are warm. That's one thing I hated about where I grew up. It would get so hot in the day that if you went outside barefoot at midnight, the ground would still burn your feet. :(
It got horrible in the daytime though. You literally could not walk outside barefoot in the summer because the ground got so screamingly hot your feet would burn and blister (I've seen dogs burn their feet too! You can't walk them until evening in the summer because their poor little feet burn...). We cooked pancakes and eggs straight on the cement one day just to see if it worked. I wish we'd had digital cameras back then, because I'd love to have the pictures to prove it. I should ask my sister to do it this summer and take a video of it for me...
The sun's peeking out a little today, which is good because it's been raining nonstop for days and my tomatoes were looking more like a wet cat than a summer plant. Poor dears. The lettuce seemed to enjoy the rain though, it's ready for harvesting! Yay! My first crop! :D
Leeny
06-15-2010, 11:58 PM
Yeah, the cold crops are going nuts with all the rain we've been having. Luckily, the last few days have been very pleasant out. It's been around 80F.

This mad me laugh. Like a lot. See, I am not exactly good with the Celsius to Fahrenheit thing so I read your description about how it being 6:30 and still roasting hot and no wind and I feel your pain because lord knows that come August I WILL be roasting every inch of my body off.
And then I used a converter to see how hot 23*C is exactly. And that is what made me laugh. Over here 23* degrees in early June is pretty much par for the course. Actually, if you ask most people around here what their idea of perfect weather is they will tell you "75 degrees and sunny." 75 degrees F is 24 degrees C.
In comparison today it went up to 84 degrees Fahrenheit and everyone admitted that it was hot, but not unbearably so. 84*F is almost 29*C. In July and August it's not unusual for us to get temps up to 95*F (35*C).
And if you ask Nevvie she will tell you straight out that we are wusses because where she lives it got up to around that today (I don't know where exactly Nev lives but I know it's in the Southern California Desert area) in the midsummer they get temps up to 110*F (43*C)!
See, it's all relative. So next time you think you are broiling your buttocks off just think, "thank God, I'm not Nevvie."

It's 95F, that's really hot for my area, like twelve degrees hotter then the adverage. The record high in the city is 103F, so it's only like 8 degrees from record breaking. I find this absolutely ridiculous.
